Abel M Peña’s career spanned 26 years as a Special Agent within the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), culminating in his retirement in May 2017. Upon completing his training at the FBI Academy, Abel commenced his service in the Chicago Division, where he engaged in investigations involving Kidnapping, Transnational Crime, Human Trafficking, Missing Persons, and Bank Robberies. Collaborating closely with the Chicago Police Department, Cook County Sheriff’s Department, and fellow FBI agents, he also delved into various cases of violent crime.
Subsequently, Abel’s responsibilities led him to the Houston Division’s Corpus Christi Resident Agency. Here, he worked on an array of cases, encompassing bank robberies, missing persons, international parental kidnapping, extortion, fugitive pursuits, and public corruption issues.
Transferring to the San Juan, Puerto Rico Field Office, Abel was assigned to a squad focusing on money laundering. Employing federal asset forfeiture laws and money laundering violations, he orchestrated undercover operations targeting money laundering and drug trafficking syndicates in Colombia. Abel’s efforts resulted in the successful prosecution of numerous money laundering cases, involving substantial cash and property seizures. Recognized for his proficiency, he assumed the role of Supervisory Special Agent (SSA), leading a team dedicated to probing judicial and law enforcement corruption.
Progressing to the San Antonio Division, Abel undertook intricate public corruption investigations, unearthing instances of bribery, kickbacks, and gratuities involving public officials at various levels.
Abel also took on the responsibility of delivering Safety and Security Briefings to business professionals traveling overseas in line with the FBI’s National Counterintelligence (CI) Strategy. He conducted comprehensive presentations to corporations on safeguarding their technology, trade secrets, and intellectual property. Furthermore, Abel provided guidance on corporate espionage during international travel, regularly engaging with industry partners to address matters of economic espionage.
Abel’s international endeavors encompassed assignments in Santiago, Chile; Panama City, Panama; and Sao Paolo, Brazil, where he served in diverse capacities with the FBI. Notably, he contributed to the International Contract Corruption Task Force (ICCTF) in the Middle East, investigating instances of contract corruption and fraud within military and government installations. Abel’s travels across the Middle East involved interactions with government officials and pivotal witness interviews.
Abel boasts extensive training in areas such as Violent Criminal Behavior, Active Shooter Response, De-escalation Techniques, Workplace Violence, Undercover Operations, and Gang/Drug Investigations. His expertise has been shared through presentations delivered to both governmental and private sector audiences on a wide range of subjects.
